Chechnya’s New Music Law Says Not Too Fast, Not Too Slow
make the cut: to be accepted or chosen because the person or thing meets the necessary standards
In Chechnya, a place rich in history and culture, authorities have decided to set new rules for music. They say music should not be too fast or too slow. This means songs must have a specific speed to be allowed. The rule is to keep music between 80 and 116 beats per minute. Why? The government wants to make sure that the music people listen to reflects their cultural heritage. They have set a deadline for musicians to adjust their songs to fit the new musical speed rule. Many styles of music, like pop, rock, and electronic dance songs, might not make the cut for being too fast or too slow. Interestingly, hip-hop, which often ranges between 85 and 95 beats per minute, should be safe.
