Astronauts Watch Eclipse From Space
sweep across: to move quickly across an area
The International Space Station (ISS), home to astronauts from around the world, offers amazing views of space. Recently, the crew had a special view of the Earth during a total solar eclipse. Unlike us on Earth, they saw the Moon’s shadow on our planet from above.
The ISS orbits Earth about 250 miles up, moving fast at 17,000 miles per hour. On April 8, the astronauts were doing their usual work when the eclipse happened. They saw the dark shadow of the Moon sweep across New York State and Newfoundland. A Starlink satellite also recorded an amazing video of the eclipse from space.
These weren’t the only remarkable videos of this event. For most people, eclipses are an opportunity to reflect on our connection to the universe. Meanwhile, Donald Trump saw a different opportunity in his unusual election advertisement linked to the eclipse.
Watch the videos below and experience the eclipse from a perspective only a few have seen.
