Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
An introvert is someone who prefers to spend time alone. They enjoy thinking and exploring their thoughts and feelings. Introverts often avoid social situations because it drains their energy. They get energized from being alone.
An extrovert, on the other hand, enjoys being around other people. They are outgoing and social, often seeking out parties and social gatherings. Extroverts actually think better while talking with other people, and get their energy from being around others.
Now most people are somewhere in between, but interestingly, a psychology professor recently showed that introverts who act like extroverts will feel a greater sense of happiness. He found that most introverts thought that they would feel anxious or embarrassed in social situations, but in fact that was not true. They actually reported greater levels of happiness and well being.
What does this mean for English learners who want to become more fluent? Well, it is no secret that you speak as much as possible with other people to get better. This means being outgoing and seeking out social situations, where you can have conversations with others. That’s natural for extroverts.
But if you are an introvert, being outgoing is not so easy. So if this professor’s research is true, then it’s good news! You don’t have to feel anxious or embarrassed about being outgoing, because if you just act like an extrovert, you’re not only more likely to feel happy, but your English speaking fluency and confidence can improve faster.
So which are you: an introvert or extrovert? Which personality type is more valued in your culture? And do you agree with the professor’s findings? Let us know in the comments.
