A small startup is cutting ice from Greenland’s glaciers and selling it to nightclubs in Dubai. The company, Arctic Ice, says this ice is cleaner and melts more slowly than normal ice. They sell a box of six cubes for $100.
The ice comes from glaciers that are thousands of years old. It is cut with a chainsaw, packed into special containers, and shipped by boat on a five-week journey. When it reaches Dubai, workers shape the cubes into spheres and put them in gift boxes.
Some people love the idea. At one nightclub, a single glass of whisky with Greenland ice costs $218. But others think it’s too much. Critics worry about pollution from shipping ice across the world. Still, unusual ice has become a trend in other places, too. In Taiwan, one restaurant gained attention for grilling ice cubes as a novelty dish.
Selling luxury ice like this may be a hard sell outside rich markets. Still, Arctic Ice hopes to grow.
