As the earth warms and mountain glaciers melt away, important scientific records are disappearing forever. Scientists cannot stop the glaciers from melting, but they can save pieces of the ice before they vanish. Researchers recently opened a special sanctuary in Antarctica to keep this ancient ice safe.
This place is like a library, but it does not have any books inside. Instead, it is a snow cave deep underground full of large pieces of ice. They are called ice cores and come from glaciers in high mountains like the Alps. Scientists need these ice cores because they act like a diary of our planet. When snow falls on a glacier, it traps dust and air from that specific time in history.
This frozen ice library is in the middle of Antarctica. Scientists from different countries work together there to protect these records. They plan to collect more ice from mountains in the Andes and the Himalayas.
Carlo Barbante is a scientist from the Ice Memory Foundation. He explains why this work is so important. He said, “We are in a race against time to rescue this heritage before it will vanish forever.” By preserving these ice layers, scientists in the future will be able to study the weather from thousands of years ago.
