Woman Robs Bank Of Her Own Money To Save Sister’s Life
a slap on the wrists: a light punishment for doing something wrong
Sali Hafiz is Lebanon’s most famous bank robber, but she didn’t take other people’s money. She robbed a bank of her own money in September of 2022. Facing hyperinflation, many people in Lebanon wanted their money, but the banks said no. Her bank limited withdrawals to just $400 a month. This was a big problem for Sali, whose sister was dying of brain cancer. To get help, Sali needed her money. So, she bravely went to the bank with a toy gun. She forcibly took back $13,000 of her money to pay for life-saving treatment for her sister. Her actions were understood by many, including the judge who gave her a slap on the wrists. She is now banned from the bank and cannot access the rest of her money, but she’s not giving up. According to a video interview with the NY Times, “If things don’t change, she’s coming back.”
