Japan’s Simple Solution for Protecting the Elderly
at-risk: in danger of experiencing harm
In Japan, a smart solution is making life safer for people with dementia. The system uses a gel sticker with a QR code, applied to the nails of at-risk individuals. This QR code can be scanned to reveal contact details. If someone gets lost, police can scan the sticker with a smartphone. This gives them a phone number to call a family member or caregiver.
In 2019, this technology helped five people in Iruma City return home safely. The service is now available in 3 parts of Japan. It’s free for local residents at risk, thanks to local government support. This sticker is not only easy to use but also cheap, making it a great option compared to GPS devices.
Japan faces a significant challenge with its aging population, particularly the increasing number of people with dementia. But it is not the only country with this problem. By 2037, the earth’s population will top 9 billion with more people over 60 than at any time in history.
