Social Media and Mental Health: Time for a Warning?
be at odds with someone or something: to disagree or conflict with someone or something
The U.S. surgeon general, Dr. Murthy, wants Congress to put warning labels on social media, similar to those on cigarette packs. He says social media can harm young people’s mental health. Many teens use social media almost all the time. Dr. Murthy believes a warning label can remind parents and teens about its potential harm.
Josh Golin from Fairplay, a group against marketing to kids, supports this idea. He said, “Social media today is like tobacco decades ago: It’s a product whose business model depends on addicting kids.” Some Congress members agree and are working on laws to protect children online.
Not everyone agrees with Dr. Murthy. There will likely be resistance from the tech industry. Adam Kovacevich, head of a tech policy group said, “Putting a warning label on online speech isn’t just scientifically unsound, it’s at odds with the constitutional right to free speech.”
