Olympian Returns Medal That Brought Him Years of Suffering
be up to someone: when one person has the responsibility or power to decide
No Olympic champion has suffered as much as Park Si-hun. His gold medal from the 1988 Seoul Games became a source of pain instead of pride.
Park was declared the winner over Roy Jones Jr., even though Jones landed more than double the punches. The decision drew outrage worldwide. In South Korea, Park faced boos at the podium and insults on television. He felt broken. He said that the gold medal led to depression and thoughts of suicide.
Park never boxed again after the Olympics while Jones became a legendary pro boxing champion.
Park said, “I keep thinking how my life would have been happier had I finished second.” In 2023, he traveled to Florida and surprised Jones by giving him the gold medal. Jones was shocked by Park’s honorable gesture. He accepted the medal and said, “It would be up to the IOC to change it with the history books.”
