Greece’s Six-Day Work Week: A Step Back or a New Beginning?
burn out: feeling very tired and stressed because of working too much
Greece has become the first EU country to introduce a six-day working week starting July 1st. This move goes against the global trend of exploring shorter work weeks.
This new rule is for businesses that are open all the time. Workers can choose to work two extra hours a day or an extra day. This means they can work 48 hours a week instead of 40.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis says this law will help workers get paid for extra work and stop undeclared labor. Many people do not like this change. They think Greek workers are already at risk of burn out. They work the longest hours in Europe. For example, in 2022, Greek workers worked an average of 1,886 hours. This is more than workers in the U.S. and other European countries.
Some experts think this law is a step back for workers. They say it is unfair when many countries are experimenting with shorter work weeks.
