Spacecraft Carrying Ashes Fails to Reach Moon, Burns Up on Return
burn up: to be destroyed by heat or fire
Last February, a spacecraft on a lunar burial mission was destroyed. It was carrying the ashes of over 70 people, including Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek. The spacecraft returned to Earth after a fuel leak and burned up in the atmosphere. This mishap meant that the human remains would not be buried on the moon, which was a relief for the Navajo Nation.
The Navajo Nation objected to the lunar burial plan, calling it a desecration. They believe the moon is sacred and were glad that human remains weren’t left there. Despite the failure, the company that organized the flight says they will continue to offer lunar burials.
