500,000 Year Old Discovery Rewrites Human History
call into question: to introduce doubt about something
Imagine finding something made by humans almost half a million years ago! That’s exactly what happened in Zambia, but it wasn’t made by humans like us. Homo sapiens date back only 300,000 years, and this discovery was much older.
Scientists in 2019 found the oldest wooden structure ever! It is made of two logs cut to fit together. This may have been the foundation of a larger structure.
You might think, “Wood can’t last that long!” But, in this area of Zambia, the water and soil helped preserve the wood.
This calls into question the belief that ancient humans were all nomadic. Building with wood shows they may have had permanent homes. Scientists also believe that the complexity of working with wood means they may also have used language.
