Mayor Fights Dog Poop with DNA Testing
can’t stand something: strongly dislike; cannot tolerate
In Béziers, a town in France, you need a special “passport” for your dog. Why? The town’s mayor, Robert Ménard, is tired of seeing dog poop everywhere.
Mayor Ménard told a newspaper, “I can’t stand it anymore.” He’s now doing something about it. Dog owners now must register their dog’s DNA and carry a dog passport. If dog poop is found on the street, the city can test it to find out who the dog owner is. And guess what? That owner has to pay for the cleanup!
Many people are surprised by this decision. Some say it’s too strict, but others believe it will help keep the streets clean. This idea isn’t new. Cities like Tel Aviv in Israel and Valencia in Spain have similar rules. In Valencia, there was a big change – a 90% drop in dog poop after they started fining people.
