close call: something bad that almost happened but was avoided
Chinese woman Liu almost lost her life climbing Mount Everest. Lucky for her, another climber named Fan Jiangtao found her unconscious near the top. Fan and another climber named Xie abandoned their trip to the top of the mountain to save her life. They promised a guide $10,000 to help them bring her to safety. But after her close call, Liu only wanted to pay $4,000, leaving Fan and Xie to pay the rest. This story has gotten a lot of attention in China, and many people online are upset about what Liu did.
