UK’s New Law Will End Smoking for Future Generations
control freak: a person who wants to control everything and make all the decisions themselves, often without considering others’ opinions
In the UK, a new law is banning cigarettes for future generations but not current smokers. This plan will raise the legal smoking age one year each year. This means that anyone born in 2009 will see the legal age to buy tobacco increase just as they reach the current legal age. So, by the time they turn 18 in 2027, the legal age to buy tobacco will have increased to 19. The following year, when they are 19, the age limit will rise to 20. This will bar them from ever legally purchasing tobacco as they age.
The new law was overwhelmingly approved by parliament with a vote of 383 to 67. Many believe it will ensure the health of future generations but not everyone agrees. Former prime minister Liz Truss called the supporters of the law control freaks.
