Ancient Human Bones Take a Trip to Space
cross the line: to do something that is wrong or unacceptable
A piece of our planet’s distant past has recently orbited the Earth. Virgin Galactic took two pieces of bone from our human ancestors into space on September 8, 2023. One was a collarbone from a human-like creature that walked our world two million years ago. The other was a thumb bone from a different ancestor, 250,000 years old. Space tourist Timothy Nash carried these bones on the flight. Some say it was a way to honor our ancestor’s spirit of invention. But many scientists think sending the bones to space crossed the line. Geologist Robyn Pickering said, “To treat ancestral remains in such a callous, unethical way — to blast them into space just because you can — there’s no scientific merit in this.”
