Wild Raccoons Are Making Their Own Toys Out of Garbage
cut short: to stop something before it is finished
In January 2026, a researcher on an island in Mexico was studying the rare pygmy raccoon when she saw something scientists had never seen. A young raccoon pulled a receipt out of a trash bin and used it to make a toy. Her family is wild, but they spend their days at a busy beach club. The staff put out a bowl of water for them every day. The raccoon first dipped the paper receipt in the water again and again. Next, she pressed and rolled the wet paper on the sand until it was a hard little ball. She hit it across the ground and chased it.
Her sister watched closely, and soon the two were playing together. They hit the balls back and forth with their paws. Sometimes one growled at the other to keep the ball for herself. Once, two young coatis, animals related to raccoons, joined the game.
When animals make or use objects, it is usually to get food. What makes this ball remarkable is that it had no practical use at all. It was only for fun.
The young raccoon who invented the game got sick and was taken away for care, where she later died. Her life was cut short, but her game did not die with her. About five days after she left, her sister made a ball from a hamburger wrapper, all by herself. The scientists believe this social learning could be early evidence of culture.
