AI Tech Makes Angry Customers Sound Calm
deal with: to take action to manage or solve a situation or problem
Customer support jobs aren’t easy. Anger, frustration, and impatience are just some of the emotions that workers have to deal with. In Japan, SoftBank has created a new technology called “emotion-canceling” to help call center workers. It uses AI to make angry callers sound calm.
When a caller is angry, the AI changes the caller’s voice to sound more peaceful. For example, a high-pitched, angry voice might be lowered to sound more calm. A booming, intimidating voice might be raised in pitch to sound less aggressive. The caller does not hear this change, but the call center worker does.
SoftBank has been working on this technology for three years to protect workers from customer harassment. This is important because many workers feel stressed and upset after dealing with angry customers.
The new system will be available in Japanese next year. SoftBank is also thinking about making this technology for other languages to help workers worldwide have a calmer work environment.
