This “Ugly” Animal Named Fish of the Year

The blobfish is one of the world’s strangest-looking animals. In 2013, the Ugly Animal Preservation Society called it the world’s ugliest animal, but that’s not completely fair. When photos of the deep-sea blobfish out of water were shared, people thought it looked like a sad blob. But some say the fish has gotten a bad rap.
In its deep underwater home, the blobfish doesn’t look like a blob at all. It lives between 600 and 1,200 meters below the surface. At this depth, the high water pressure keeps its body from deforming into a blob. There, it looks more like a regular fish.
This year, the blobfish is shaking off its title of ugliest animal with a new title. New Zealand named it Fish of the Year. Radio hosts in New Zealand helped the blobfish win by telling people to vote for the underdog. They wanted to show that every animal is special, even if it doesn’t look perfect. We need to protect all sea animals, not just the beautiful ones.
