Would You Change Your Name for Free Sushi? Hundreds Did
get carried away: to become too excited or do too much of something
In 2021, a restaurant in Taiwan offered free sushi to anyone whose name included the word “salmon.” Many people got carried away with the promotion. Over 300 people rushed to change their names so they could eat for free with their friends. Government officials were overwhelmed with all the Salmon name change paperwork and asked people to stop.
Some of the new names were funny and creative. One student changed his name to something that means “Explosive Good Looking Salmon.” Others chose names like “Salmon Prince” and “Salmon Fried Rice.”
One medical student changed his name to Salmon Dream. It was his second legal name change, and he planned to change it again after the sushi promotion ended. At first, he was shocked to learn that Taiwan limits the number of legal name changes and feared his new name might be permanent. Later, officials explained that people in Taiwan can legally change their name three times. Mr. Salmon Dream had only changed his name twice and could still change it one more time.
