Restaurant Rage Leads to Fast Food Justice
get off easy: to receive a lighter punishment than expected
Rosemary Hayne was unhappy with her meal at a fast food restaurant. She angrily threw her hot burrito bowl in the face of the manager, Emily Russell. This meltdown led to an unusual court decision.
Instead of receiving a traditional punishment, the judge wanted to teach Hayne some empathy for restaurant workers. He offered her a choice. She could spend 90 days in jail, or only 30 days in jail, plus work in a fast food restaurant for 60 days. Hayne agreed to the reduced jail time plus two months of fast food work and apologized.
While some believe she got off easy, Russell is satisfied with the punishment. She said, “She got exactly what she deserved. She’s gonna walk in my shoes.”
