This Online Doorbell Lets You Help Fish from Anywhere
get on with something: to continue doing something after stopping or being interrupted
In Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands, people have made a special doorbell for fish. This fish doorbell helps them move through the city’s canals when a gate is closed. When it’s springtime and the weather is cold, many fish travel through the canals to lay eggs. But a closed dam stops them, leaving them at risk of being eaten by birds.
To help these fish, Anne Nijs and Mark van Heukelum created a special underwater camera. Anyone, including you, can watch the camera online. If you see fish waiting at the gate, press a button that alerts the dam operator. When enough fish are waiting, the gate is opened, and the fish can get on with their journey.
Since March 2024, over a million people have joined this effort, with the live stream attracting up to 1,000 viewers at a time.
