300 Families Leave Their Island Home Due to Climate Change
get used to: to become familiar or comfortable with something over time
People on a small island in Panama are moving to the mainland because of rising sea levels. About 300 families from Gardi Sugdub Island are packing their things and getting ready to leave. They have lived on this island for hundreds of years, fishing and welcoming tourists.
Moving to the mainland will be a big change for these families. They are leaving behind the sea they love and will have to get used to living on solid ground in the forest.
The decision to move was made because of climate change. The sea is rising, and stronger storms and unbearable heat also make life difficult. The Gunas have tried to protect their island with rocks and coral, but the seawater keeps coming.
Scientists say that close to 38,000 people along Panama’s coasts will need to move by the end of the century. Panama’s government thinks it will cost about $1.2 billion to help all of them relocate.
