The Ancient Village Built Above Water and Guarded by Spikes
go to the trouble: to make a special effort or take extra steps to do something
Archaeologists have found an ancient village built on stilts deep under Lake Ohrid near the border of Albania and North Macedonia. This village believed to be the oldest of its kind in Europe, dates back almost 8,000 years.
Why they went to the trouble to build upon stilts is just one mystery. The village was surrounded by 100,000 wooden spikes! Some believe the spikes were built to defend the village, but why did a village of just 500 people need so many? One of the leading researchers, Albert Hafner explained, “To protect themselves in this way, they had to cut down a forest.”
