Meet Jonathan: The 191-Year-Old Tortoise Still Full of Life!
going strong: to continue to be healthy, active, or successful, especially after a long time
Jonathan, a giant tortoise, recently celebrated his 191st birthday. This makes him the oldest living land animal. He lives on St. Helena, where he has become well-known. He was born around 1832, before the invention of the telephone and the lightbulb.
Despite his age, Jonathan is still going strong. He has a strong appetite and an active libido. An interesting aspect of Jonathan’s life is his relationship with a tortoise named Fredericka. After a vet discovered this tortoise was actually a male, he was renamed Fred. While Jonathan also has a romantic relationship with a female named Emma, these tortoises seem to be ambivalent to gender when mating.
Jonathan’s health is excellent. His veterinarian believes he could live to see his third century.
