Skinny Discount at Thai Restaurant Sparks Outrage
hit a nerve: to say something about a sensitive topic that makes someone feel upset or uncomfortable
A restaurant in Thailand has made people angry by offering a “skinny discount.” At Chiang Mai Breakfast World, customers pay less if they can squeeze through metal bars at the entrance. The narrower the gap, the bigger the discount. If you can’t fit, you pay full price.
Tourists from the UK filmed a man trying to slide through the bars for a 15% discount. The lighthearted video quickly got eight million views.
Some people thought it was funny online, but it hit a nerve with others. One person said, “This can promote eating disorders.” Another asked, “Why would someone need to pay more just because they aren’t a size 0?”
This wasn’t a completely unique idea. A restaurant in China offered a similar promotion in 2018 giving free meals to people who could fit through a narrow entrance. The Thai restaurant says they did it just for fun, but many think it’s unfair. Watch the video below and decide for yourself if this is clever marketing or mean-spirited discrimination.
