Smart Raccoons Outsmart 31 Million Dollar High-Tech Trash Bins
in particular: especially or more than others
Toronto is known for its high raccoon population. The city has an average of three hundred raccoons per square kilometer. These animals are often seen digging through the city’s trash, looking for food. Toronto spent over 31 million dollars to create new trash bins that raccoons couldn’t open. The bins had special locks and were tested to be raccoon-resistant. However, two weeks after the bins were used, raccoons learned how to open them.
Scientists found that raccoons are as smart as young children. They have excellent memory and solve problems well. This makes them very good at getting into bins. Some raccoons are better learners than others. Shy raccoons, in particular, tend to be better at learning new tasks compared to bolder ones. The more we try to outsmart raccoons with new bin designs, the more they adapt and become even smarter.
