When the Nottoway Plantation burned down, some people on social media rejoiced. The plantation was built in 1859 in Louisiana by a wealthy man who used over 150 slaves to work the land. In more recent years, it became a fancy hotel and wedding venue.
On the night of May 14, staff saw smoke in the south wing of the very large building. Even though firefighters tried their best, the building could not be saved.
Some local leaders were sad because it brought money to the local economy. But many people online felt differently. They said the building was a symbol of cruelty, and it was wrong to hold parties there. For them, the fire felt like justice.
One person wrote that the resort didn’t even mention slavery on its website. Another shared a video of the fire and said, “Seeing the flames and knowing the history… It’s about time.”
