Killer Whale Fads: From Salmon Hats to Boat Attacks
keep away: to stay at a distance from something or someone
Killer whales have been hitting and sinking boats off the coasts of Spain, Portugal, France, and Morocco for five years. Scientists now think they know why. The whales are not angry at boats. They are just bored and find attacking boat rudders fun.
Orcas have shown similar playful behavior in the past. In the late 1980s, orcas in the Pacific Northwest began carrying dead salmon on their heads. This unusual fad started with young orcas and quickly spread to the entire group. Just like attacking boat rudders, this salmon hat trend was just a fad. It was something the whales did for fun when they were bored.
Experts have recommended that boats keep away from areas where killer whales are active. They have also recommended changing the rudder’s look to keep whales away. These measures have already decreased the number of whale encounters over the past year.
