China Builds A Great Green Wall Around Largest Desert
keep in check: to control or limit something to prevent it from becoming worse
China has created a giant ring of trees around its biggest desert after 46 years of hard work. The Green Belt or Green Wall is 3,000 km long and was built with the help of 600,000 workers. Its main goal is to reduce sandstorms and protect farmland from turning to desert.
Over time, China has tested many tree species to find those that survive best in dry areas. Thanks to these efforts, the country’s forest coverage has increased from about 10% in 1949 to more than 25% by the end of last year.
Some people say sandstorms still happen, but officials continue to add more trees to keep the desert in check. According to official data, 26.8% of China’s land is still “desertified,” slightly better than a decade ago. Many hope these actions will help create a greener future.
