In Wyoming and Oregon, farmers are using drones to protect their cows from wolves with a little help from Scarlett Johansson.
Wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park years ago. Since then, some farmers have lost many cattle. They cannot kill the wolves because the animals are protected. Instead, they fly drones over their fields. The drones play music from the rock band AC/DC and movie scenes with human voices. One of the voices comes from actress Scarlett Johansson in Marriage Story, a movie about a couple getting divorced. The wolves seem to dislike the sound of people arguing.
This method has helped keep the wolves at bay. In one test, attacks went from 11 in 20 days to only 2 in 85 days. Paul Wolf, a district supervisor in Oregon, said, “I need the wolves to respond and know that, hey, humans are bad.” Farmers say it is saving them money and giving them a wolf story that always gets a laugh.
