Quick Rescue After Whale Crash Sinks Sailboat
kick in: to start to have an effect or to start operating
Imagine enjoying a pizza on a calm sea when suddenly a gigantic whale crashes into your boat! That’s exactly what Rick Rodriguez and his friends experienced during a peaceful sail across the Pacific Ocean.
The group had left on a three-week journey from the Galápagos Islands to French Polynesia. However, on day 13, a massive whale interrupted their lunchtime. “The boat lifted violently,” said Rodriguez. In moments, they were sinking.
Their training kicked in. They quickly gathered food and fresh water, and got in a lifeboat. Rodriguez used a cell phone to get help. They were safely rescued within hours.
Despite the ordeal, Rodriguez said, “We were in the right place at the right time to go down.”
