First-Time Mom at 97 Breaks a World Record

A tortoise named Mommy just became a mother for the first time at the age of 97! She lives at the Philadelphia Zoo and is one of the oldest tortoises there. Her partner, Abrazzo, is 96 years old.
Mommy’s babies are all girls and are doing well. These are very special endangered animals, and there are not many of them left in the world. Before this, only 44 were living in the US. Now, there is new hope for the future.
Although Mommy and Abrazzo didn’t make a love connection on the first try, they later succeeded. This helped Mommy make history by becoming the oldest known first-time mother of her kind.
She has lived at the zoo for over 90 years after arriving from the Galápagos Islands in 1932. Her babies will be introduced to the public on April 23, exactly 93 years after she came to the zoo.
