When the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, Michael Hingson was on the 78th floor. Blind since birth, he had only his guide dog, Roselle, to help him find a way out. As smoke and panic spread through the building, Roselle stayed calm and focused.
Michael made a quick call to his wife. Then he and Roselle began walking down the emergency stairs. Step by step, they moved through smoke, falling debris, and terrified people. On the 50th floor, a colleague panicked and said, “Mike, we’re going to die. We’re not gonna make it out of here.” Michael told him to calm down. He said, “If Roselle and I can make it out, so can you.” One hour and 1,463 steps later, they finally reached the ash-filled street just before the second tower fell.
Roselle died in 2011, but Michael says he thinks about her every day.
