make up for lost time: to do things that you could not do before because you were busy or unable
In 2016, 82-year-old Betty Morrell met her 96-year-old mother, Lena Pierce, for the first time. Betty was born as Eva in 1933. Her mother, Lena, was only 14 at the time. Baby Eva was taken from Lena by the government. They said she was too young to care for the baby. Eva was adopted by a family who renamed her Betty. She lived a happy life, but she always wanted to find her birth mother.
Betty was informed that Lena had died, but she continued searching for fifty years. Her granddaughter helped her search online. Eventually, they discovered one of Lena’s daughters, who confirmed Lena was still alive.
The emotional reunion happened at Binghamton Airport. Betty and Lena hugged and cried, overwhelmed with joy. Betty also learned she had six siblings. She and her new family are now planning more visits to make up for lost time.
