These Therapy Animals Also Fight Crime
more than meets the eye: someone or something is more interesting, complex, or impressive than it first appears
When a thief in England robbed a woman and ran from the police, he made one very bad choice. He squeezed through a fence onto a quiet farm, certain that nobody would find him there. He was wrong.
Eight llamas lived on that farm. They saw the stranger and ran straight at him, forming a tight circle so he could not escape. Then they started their strange and eerie warning cry. The owner, Heidi Price, says it “sounds like an old man laughing.” The llamas trapped the man until the police arrived and arrested him.
These animals were never trained to fight crime. Heidi rescued them ten years ago from a farm that closed. At first, no one could even touch them. Today they are gentle therapy animals, and they comfort people with mental health problems. There is clearly more to these calm, fuzzy creatures than meets the eye.
Llamas are not the only surprising guard animals. In Warsaw, Poland, a water plant uses eight live mussels to protect the whole city. Tiny sensors are glued to their shells. When the water is clean, the mussels stay open and feed. When they sense pollution, they quickly snap shut. That small movement sets off an alarm, and workers rush to test the water.
After three months on the job, the mussels are taken out and set free in clean water. They swim away with no idea that, for a while, they kept an entire city safe.
