AI Helps Dead Man Speak to His Killer
be moved by something: to feel strong emotions—such as sadness, love, or respect—because of something you see, hear, or experience
When the judge pressed play, a dead man began to speak. His name was Christopher Pelkey, and he was killed in 2021 during a road rage incident. But in court, he spoke again—through an AI-generated video made by his family.
Pelkey’s sister, Stacey Wales, worked with her husband and a friend to create the video. It showed Pelkey thanking the judge and forgiving the man who had killed him. His face and voice were made with AI tools. Wales said she didn’t want to put her own words in her brother’s mouth. She was not ready to forgive the man, but she believed her brother would have.
The judge was moved by the video and gave Pelkey’s killer nearly 13 years in prison. He said the AI message felt real and emotional.
Experts have raised concerns about using AI in court. Still, many people who saw the video said it was powerful.
