Hidden World War II Bomb Explodes at Japanese Airport

A hidden bomb from World War II suddenly exploded at a Japanese airport on October 2. The 550-pound bomb had been buried under the taxiway at Miyazaki Airport for nearly 80 years.
Just before the bomb exploded, a plane had moved across that section of the airport. It was a near miss, and fortunately, no one was hurt. The explosion made a big hole and caused more than 80 flights to be canceled.
Police and military officials are checking why the bomb went off after so many years. They think vibrations from a plane might have caused it. The government is now searching for more old bombs at this and other airports.
Many bombs from World War II are still buried in Japan and other countries like Germany and England. They are usually found during construction projects and are safely removed. Last year, Japan removed over 2,300 old bombs.
