Elvis Flew Across the Country for This Sandwich
not hold back: to do something fully and without hesitation
Elvis Presley was a music legend, but he was also famous for his love of food. The King of Rock’ n’ Roll did not hold back in his love for high-calorie meals. He famously ate a peanut butter and banana sandwich fried in butter every day.
That wasn’t his most indulgent meal. Late one night in 1976, he had a craving for a unique sandwich called the Fool’s Gold Loaf. This special sandwich was made by a restaurant in Denver, Colorado. Rather than ignoring his hunger, Elvis and his friends flew across the country in his private jet to get it.
This was no ordinary sandwich. It was filled with a pound of crispy bacon, a jar of peanut butter, and a jar of grape jelly inside a warm French bread loaf. Just one sandwich contained 8,000 calories. At the time, it cost $49.95, which is about $276 today.
The owners of the restaurant met them at the airport at 1:40 AM with 22 of the calorie-rich sandwiches. Elvis and his friends spent two hours at the airport, eating and drinking champagne before flying back home.
