Whittier is not your typical town. Tucked between mountains and sea in southern Alaska, it’s off the beaten path.
Whittier has about 272 people. Almost all of them live under one roof. Inside this 14-story building, they have everything and rarely need to leave. There is a post office, a church, a store, and even a police station. Children can go to a school connected to the building by a tunnel without ever going outside.
The town is often hit by strong winds, snow, and rain. Because of the bad weather, people stay inside the building most of the time. This makes life in Whittier quiet and close-knit. Some people say it feels like a small family.
Whittier is hard to reach and very different from other places, but for the people who live there, it feels like home.
