pack on the pounds: to gain a lot of weight in a short amount of time
Voting has begun for the annual Fat Bear competition in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Twelve massive bears are chosen to see who is the biggest and fattest, all before they go to sleep for the winter.
These bears aren’t packing on the pounds for fun. In the late summer, they begin to prepare for a long winter nap. Leptin, the chemical that normally signals being full, is suppressed. This allows the bears to eat and eat!
Bears eat lots of fish, especially salmon. One famous bear, Otis, ate 42 salmon in just over 5 hours! Baby bears, called cubs, grow fast, too. They start at only 1 pound at birth. But after one year, they weigh 70 pounds!
Last year’s competition received over a million votes from around the world. Check out their live webcams to see these eating machines in action before voting.
