Scientists have reconstructed the face of a Neanderthal woman who lived 75,000 years ago. In 2018, researchers found her skull in a cave in Iraqi Kurdistan. This woman was about 45 years old when she died. The researchers carefully put together her skull from 200 pieces, a task that took nine months. This allowed them to create a model of her face to see what she looked like.
The woman’s face is shown in a new Netflix documentary, “Secrets of the Neanderthals.” Neanderthals lived alongside modern humans for thousands of years before disappearing 40,000 years ago. The show challenges the idea that this human species was primitive. Instead, it paints a picture Neanderthals were smart and cultured, much like us.
