This Animal Can Live 10 Years Without Food
pale in comparison: to seem much less important or impressive when compared with something else
A human can live for about three weeks without eating. This pales in comparison to the magical salamander. A blind cave salamander called an olm can live for ten years without food. These unique animals can live in complete darkness and barely move or eat over their long lives. Olms can live up to 100 years. They can survive without food for many years by slowing down their metabolism.
These blind salamanders live underwater in caves in Bosnia-Herzegovina. They eat small shrimps and snails, which they find using their excellent hearing. To study olms, divers caught them, marked them, and put them back in the same place. They checked on the olms over eight years. One salamander broke a record for staying still for seven years.
This study is not just about learning how long olms can stay still. Olms are sensitive to changes in their environment, so they can help us see how humans affect their environment.
