Man Arrested After Trying to Visit Uncontacted Tribe

Visiting an uncontacted tribe known to kill outsiders is playing with fire, but that didn’t stop Mykhailo Polyakov. The 24-year-old American recently visited North Sentinel Island, the home of the Sentinelese. The isolated tribe has no contact with modern civilization, and they want to keep it that way. In 2018, American missionary John Allen Chau was killed after illegally traveling there. Despite the risks, Polyakov decided to go anyway. He blew a whistle from his small boat for one hour to warn the locals before stepping onto the island. No one came to meet him. After filming a video on the beach, he left a can of Coke and a coconut before leaving the island.
After returning to his hotel, Polyakov was arrested by Indian police. Visiting the island has been illegal since 1956. Polyakov was lucky to escape with his life, but it is not only dangerous for visitors. It is also dangerous for the Sentinalese. Caroline Pearce, a director of an indigenous rights group, called his visit reckless and idiotic. She said, “Uncontacted peoples have no immunity to common outside diseases like flu or measles.” She warned that visiting the island could kill the whole tribe.
