Ancient Egyptians were known for their advanced medical skills. They could treat various diseases and injuries. A recent discovery has shown that they might have also treated cancer over 4,000 years ago.
Scientists have found the skull of a man who lived between 2687 and 2345 BCE. This skull showed a large lesion caused by excessive tissue growth, known as a neoplasm. There were also 30 smaller lesions indicating metastasis. The scientists pointed out the small marks on the skull that suggest doctors may have tried to cut out the cancer.
Another skull belonging to a woman over 50 years old from 663 to 343 BCE also showed signs of cancer. This skull had healed injuries that may be evidence of successful cancer treatment. These findings suggest that ancient Egyptian doctors were more advanced than previously thought.
