Montenegro’s Lying Down Contest Breaks Records
poke fun at: to make jokes about someone or something in a friendly or teasing way
In Montenegro, people compete in the “Laziest Citizen” contest. The rules are simple. Participants cannot stand up, but they are allowed to sleep, eat, read, and take short bathroom breaks every eight hours.
This annual contest began as a way to poke fun at the stereotype that Montenegrins are lazy. In 2021, the winner stayed lying down for 117 hours. Last year, the competition broke all records, lasting 50 days. The winners, Lidija Markovi? and Filip Kneževi?, stayed lying down for the entire time. Lidija, a beautician, said, “I came to enjoy, to rest, and of course, to win.” Meanwhile, Filip, a student, joked about buying a nice bed with his prize money. They stood up together and shared the 1,000-euro prize.
