Spiders Show Signs of Dreaming at Night
raise questions: to make people ask questions about something or to cause them to be curious
Spiders might dream just like humans. Scientist Daniela Rößler began studying jumping spiders at home. She noticed that at night, the spiders hung upside down on silk threads and twitched their legs. This behavior looked like REM sleep in humans.
REM sleep is a sleep stage when our eyes move quickly and is associated with dreaming. Wondering if spiders experience something similar, Rößler and her team also studied baby spiders. Because baby spiders are transparent, they could see that the spiders’ eyes also moved. The leg twitching and eye movements happened in 20 to 30 minute intervals, similar to REM sleep in humans and other animals. While we can’t be sure if spiders truly dream, these similarities raise questions about the evolutionary purpose of dreams.
What spiders dream about is a mystery. Researchers think they might be dreaming of hunting or escaping from predators. Like human REM sleep, spider dreams might help them learn.
