Shocking Height Requirement for University Students
reverse course: to change a decision or plan to the opposite direction
The School of Management and Business (HSB) at Vietnam National University is in the news for height discrimination. They said that girls must be at least 1.58 meters tall, and boys must be at least 1.65 meters tall to study there.
On June 6, the Ministry of Education told the university to look at the height rule again. They have since reversed course. They now say height is no longer a requirement to study there. They are still applying the height rule to one course called Management and Security. HSB says being tall is necessary for leadership and self-confidence. While many cultures stereotype tall people as stronger or more competent, it is ironic that a university would reinforce this belief. Universities should challenge such biases, not perpetuate them.
