Watch: Tiny Surgery Helps Butterfly Fly Again
run across: to meet or find someone or something by chance
The monarch butterfly was missing a wing, a fatal injury for a creature that is built to migrate thousands of kilometers. When Dagmar Hoffdavis ran across the injured insect in New York, it could not fly. He took the butterfly to the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown, New York.
Wildlife rehabilitation director Janine Bendicksen quickly made a plan to perform surgery on the tiny patient. She searched the center and found a dead monarch with a wing “in perfect shape.” Bendicksen had to be very careful during the five hour operation. She said the fragile insect could “fall apart if I pressed too hard.” She used contact cement, corn starch, and a thin wire to hold the butterfly in place. When the job was done, the butterfly was released. It flew away smoothly able to continue it’s journey to Mexico.
