Hurricane Destroys North Carolina Safe Haven
safe haven: a place where people feel safe and protected from danger or problems
Asheville, North Carolina, was once seen as a safe haven from climate disasters. Its distance from the ocean and location in the mountains led many to believe it was protected from extreme weather. Many people moved there to escape heat and extreme weather. Some Ashville residents and real estate agents talked of a climate migration to their safe haven. But Hurricane Helene changed that last Friday.
The hurricane brought strong winds and heavy rain to Asheville. More than 50 people lost their lives in the flooding, and many others are still missing. The city’s roads and power lines were destroyed, making it hard for people to get food and water. North Carolina State Climatologist said, “Helene was supercharged by climate change, and we should expect more storms like this going forward.”
